In a remarkable tribute to India’s ancient linguistic legacy, the Government of Gujarat has announced a vibrant three-day Sanskrit Week celebration ahead of World Sanskrit Day, observed on August 9. From August 6 to 8, 2025, the state will immerse itself in themed events spotlighting Sanskrit’s literary brilliance, conversational relevance, and cultural depth.
Led by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and the Gujarat State Sanskrit Board, the initiative is part of a larger mission to revive and reintroduce Sanskrit in everyday life, education, and governance.
Day-Wise Celebrations: A Journey Through Sanskrit’s Glory
August 6 – Sanskrit Gaurav Yatra
Grand processions across Gujarat will showcase Sanskrit’s scientific, spiritual, and poetic legacy. Scholars, students, poets, and artists will chant Sanskrit slogans, sing traditional hymns, and host exhibitions—bringing the classical language alive on the streets.
August 7 – Sanskrit Sambhashan Divas
In a unique move, top leaders including the Chief Minister, ministers, and bureaucrats will address gatherings in Sanskrit, promoting its use in official and public communication.
August 8 – Sanskrit Sahitya Divas
A day dedicated to Sanskrit literature, featuring Ved Puja, Rishi Puja, Vyas Puja, and recitations across schools and cultural hubs. Public lectures and literary gatherings will further explore the depth of ancient texts.
‘Yojana Panchakam’: Five Sanskrit-Focused Schemes Launched
To sustain the momentum, the state has unveiled the ‘Yojana Panchakam’, a strategic plan with five flagship schemes:
1. Sanskrit Saptahotsav Yojana – Boosting Sanskrit Week celebrations statewide
2. Sanskrit Samvardhan Sahayata Yojana – Supporting scholars, teachers, and institutions financially
3. Sanskrit Protsahan Yojana – Encouraging Sanskrit learning in schools
4. Shrimad Bhagwat Gita Yojana – Promoting life lessons and verse memorization
5. Shat Subhashit Kanthpath Yojana – Instilling values through 100 timeless Sanskrit proverbs
These schemes aim to integrate Sanskrit into modern education, technology, and public life, ensuring its survival for generations to come.
A Language Beyond Time: Sanskrit’s Spiritual and National Role
Quoting the Sanskrit verse, “Amritam Sanskritam Mitram…”, the program emphasizes Sanskrit’s role in spiritual growth, scientific temper, and national unity. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also called for renewed efforts to reconnect with the language that once served as India’s scholarly bedrock.
Sanskrit Day on Shravan Purnima: Reviving Ancient Academic Traditions
Falling on Shravan Purnima, which also marks Raksha Bandhan, Sanskrit Day is rooted in the ancient Gurukul tradition, where students began their Vedic education on this auspicious day. The revival of these rituals today signals a resurgence of classical knowledge in modern India.
