Goa, April 22, 2024 – The Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) Tarini returned to its home base in Goa yesterday after completing a groundbreaking two-month transoceanic expedition. This historic voyage was notable not only for its duration and the challenges overcome but also because it was led by an all-women crew, a first for India.

The vessel, helmed by Lieutenant Commanders Dilna K and Roopa A, sailed into Goa to cheers and celebrations, marking a triumphant end to their journey which began on February 28, 2024. The expedition was flagged off by retired Commander Abhilash Tomy, a renowned circumnavigator and mentor to the duo. Tomy’s presence underscored the significance of the mission, aimed at showcasing the capabilities of Indian women in the naval sector.

During the course of their voyage, the crew faced numerous challenges, including navigating through heavy winds and rough seas. Yet, their skills and determination saw them through, as they safely reached their first major stop, Port Louis, Mauritius, on March 21. The stopover was more than just a break; it involved a series of engagements with key maritime and governmental figures. This included a collaborative training sortie with the Mauritius Coast Guard, which not only allowed for an exchange of skills but also strengthened diplomatic ties between India and Mauritius.

The return journey to Goa began on March 30 amidst similarly tough conditions, further testing the mettle of the two officers. Their safe arrival in Goa is a testament to their resilience and the rigorous training that members of the Indian Navy undergo.

Lieutenant Commanders Dilna and Roopa’s journey is significant for several reasons. Firstly, it underscores the Indian Navy’s ongoing commitment to gender equality and the empowerment of women within its ranks. Their success is likely to inspire countless other women in India to consider careers in areas traditionally dominated by men.

Looking ahead, the officers are preparing for an even more daunting challenge—a global circumnavigation scheduled for September this year. This upcoming expedition, Sagar Parikrama – IV, promises to push the boundaries of their experience and skills.

The INSV Tarini was officially welcomed back by the Commanding Officer of INS Mandovi and the Naval Station Commander North Goa, in a ceremony that was attended by naval personnel and their families. This celebration was not just about welcoming a vessel back to shore; it was about recognizing the collective efforts and achievements of the Indian Navy as a whole.
