In a major step to strengthen road safety enforcement, Gurgaon Police have announced that motorists caught driving under the influence of alcohol will now face registration of an FIR, in addition to existing penalties such as challans, licence suspension and vehicle impounding.
The decision marks a shift from earlier practice, where police typically issued fines and suspended driving licences, with vehicles impounded only when alcohol levels exceeded prescribed limits.
What the New Rules Mean
Under the revised enforcement framework:
●Drivers failing breathalyser tests will face a challan.
●Their driving licence will be suspended for three months.
●An FIR will be registered at the nearest police station.
●Vehicles may be impounded depending on the severity of the violation.
Traffic officers said the new approach will be implemented immediately during routine checks across the city.
Move Aimed at Deterrence
Police data shows that more than 26,000 drunken-driving challans were issued last year in Gurgaon, highlighting the scale of the problem.
Officials believe that challans alone were not sufficient to deter habitual offenders. By adding criminal proceedings, authorities aim to curb repeat violations and enhance accountability.
“This could be a major step to restrict drunk driving and save precious lives. Such violations not only risk the offender’s life but also endanger others,” a senior officer said.

Part of Wider Traffic Crackdown
The crackdown is being conducted under the direction of Police Commissioner Vikas Arora and supervision of DCP (Traffic) Rajesh Mohan. Regular drives are underway across highways and arterial roads.
The move mirrors recent action against wrong-side driving, where FIRs are now being filed more consistently. Last month alone, several criminal cases were registered against wrong-side drivers.
Police have reiterated that strict enforcement campaigns will continue to improve road discipline and make Gurgaon’s roads safer for commuters.
