NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered a case against a Neuro Surgeon at Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi, and four others, including middlemen and the proprietor of a private surgical shop, on charges of bribery and other illegal activities.

The accused doctor was allegedly involved in taking money from patients for giving medical advice and conducting surgeries, bypassing the laid down rules and regulations of the hospital.

The CBI received information that the accused doctor was directing patients through middlemen to purchase surgical instruments from the surgical shop owned by the said proprietor. It was alleged that the accused compelled the patients to pay an amount higher than the actual price for these instruments and used to get a share in the overbilling by the said shop. The accused doctor was allegedly laundering his illegally earned money through companies being managed by a private person.

The CBI conducted searches at various places, including Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, and recovered incriminating documents, digital devices, and other evidence. In three different instances, the accused doctor allegedly took bribes of Rs 1,15,000/-, Rs.55,000/- & Rs.30,000/- from the attendants of patients through a private person acting as a middleman in the bank account of another private person.

The CBI arrested the accused doctor and four others and will produce them before the competent authority in Delhi. The case has raised concerns about the illegal activities being carried out in hospitals and the need for a stricter mechanism to monitor and regulate such activities. The CBI has assured the public that it will take stringent action against all those found guilty of such practices.
