Prime Minister Narendra Modi has released the first installment of housing funds to over 53,600 beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U) in Bihar, marking a major push towards affordable housing for the economically weaker sections of society.
Speaking at the event, the Prime Minister reiterated his government’s dedication to providing pucca houses for every urban poor family, ensuring a better and dignified life for those belonging to EWS (Economically Weaker Section), LIG (Lower Income Group), and disadvantaged communities.

Modi emphasized that the NDA government is fulfilling the vision of legendary leaders like Dr. Rajendra Prasad and Brajkishore Prasad, who worked for the upliftment of the poor. He also pointed out that this scheme is not only about providing homes but about building the foundations for a prosperous and self-reliant India.
What is PMAY-U?
Launched as the government’s flagship housing scheme, PMAY-U aims to provide affordable, permanent housing to those who do not own a pucca house across India. This includes street vendors, daily wage workers, rickshaw pullers, migrant laborers, and women from vulnerable sections, especially widows and those from SC, ST, OBC, and minority groups.
Under the scheme, applicants are classified into:
EWS: Income up to ₹3 lakh/year
LIG: ₹3 lakh–₹6 lakh/year
MIG-I: ₹6 lakh–₹9 lakh/year
