Many people fear donating blood due to long-held myths, but experts say it’s time to set the record straight. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Vikas Dua, Principal Director and Head of Pediatric Haematology, Haemato Oncology, and Bone Marrow Transplant at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram, debunks eight common myths that stop people from performing this life-saving act.

Myth 1: Donating Blood Will Make You Weak

Truth: Not at all. The body replaces the lost fluid within hours and red blood cells within weeks. Most people feel normal after 24 hours with proper rest and hydration.

Myth 2: You Can Run Out of Blood

Truth: The body contains 10–12 pints of blood. A donation only takes 1 pint, and your bone marrow starts replenishing it immediately.

Myth 3: Blood Donation is Painful

Truth: It’s just a quick pinch! Most donors say it’s painless and over in less than 10 minutes.

Myth 4: You Can Catch Diseases from Donating

Truth: All donation equipment is sterile and used only once. There’s zero chance of getting infections like HIV or hepatitis.

Myth 5: Only Certain Ages Can Donate

Truth: Anyone aged 18 to 65 (sometimes even up to 70) can donate if healthy. Some teens may donate with parental consent.

Myth 6: Medication Disqualifies You

Truth: Most common medications, like antihistamines or birth control pills, don’t disqualify you. Always check with your blood bank.

Myth 7: Vegetarians Can’t Donate Due to Low Iron

Truth: Many vegetarians have adequate iron. A simple hemoglobin test ensures safety before donating.

Myth 8: One Donation Doesn’t Matter

Truth: One pint can save up to 3 lives. From accident victims to cancer patients—your donation truly counts.

Blood donation is a selfless act of service that saves lives daily. Busting these myths can empower more people to donate safely and confidently. As Dr. Dua emphasizes, it’s time we separate facts from fear and take a small step with a massive impact.
