Lost Father, Faced Poverty, Became IPS: Divya Tanwar’s Inspiring Journey from Haryana Village to UPSC Success

In a country where millions dream of clearing the UPSC Civil Services Examination, only a handful succeed. Among them is Divya Tanwar, who transformed personal tragedy and financial struggle into a story of triumph, becoming one of India’s youngest IPS officers.

A Childhood Marked by Loss and Hardship

Divya Tanwar hails from Nimbi village in Haryana’s Mahendragarh district. Her life took a difficult turn in 2011 when she lost her father at a young age. The family, already facing financial challenges, was now solely dependent on her mother, Babita Tanwar, who worked as a farm labourer and stitched clothes to support her four children. Despite the hardship, Babita prioritised education — a decision that would change Divya’s life forever.

From Village School to Navodaya Vidyalaya

Divya began her schooling in a government school in her village, excelling in academics from the start. Her dedication earned her admission to Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV), where she continued her studies with discipline and focus. After completing her science degree, she decided to dedicate herself entirely to UPSC preparation.

Self-Study over Coaching Institutes

While most aspirants spend lakhs on coaching centres, Divya took a different path. Using online resources, test series, and mock exams, she relied on self-discipline and a clear strategy. Her confidence proved that success in UPSC does not require expensive coaching, but the right mindset and planning.

The Breakthrough: From IPS to IAS Rank Dreams

In 2021, at just 21 years old, Divya appeared for the UPSC exam for the first time. She scored 930 marks (751 in written + 179 in interview), achieving All India Rank (AIR) 438 — making her one of the youngest IPS officers in the country. But Divya wasn’t done yet.

In 2022, she appeared again with even greater determination. This time she scored 994 marks (834 in written + 160 in interview) and secured AIR 105, fulfilling her dream of becoming an IPS officer in the Manipur cadre.

A Role Model for Young India

Divya Tanwar’s journey — from losing her father, studying in a village school, supporting her mother, and self-studying for UPSC — has become a symbol of resilience for youth across India. Her success proves that hard work, focus, and self-belief can break any barrier, no matter where you start.

Her story continues to inspire countless aspirants who see in her a reflection of their own struggles. Divya now uses her platform to motivate others, embodying the spirit of perseverance that UPSC success truly demands.
