From launching Eastern India’s first industrial waste facility to running the country’s largest municipal solid waste project, Ravi Kant has transformed the way India handles waste. His journey from the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) to the boardroom of India’s biggest environmental management company is a case study in how policy experience and corporate innovation can combine to solve some of the country’s toughest problems.
Building a Green Foundation in the IAS
In his early years as an IAS officer in West Bengal, Ravi Kant identified a glaring gap in India’s waste management systems. He spearheaded the creation of Eastern India’s first Industrial Waste Management Facility at Haldia—a pioneering 75-acre public-private partnership that handled segregation, collection, treatment, and disposal of industrial waste. This project prevented pollutants from entering rivers and land, setting a benchmark for environmentally responsible infrastructure.
In 2007, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee presented Ravi Kant with the Environment Excellence Award for this groundbreaking work—recognition of a bureaucrat who was reshaping policy into practice.
From Government to Corporate — A Bold Leap
In 2006, Ravi Kant voluntarily retired from the IAS to pursue his passion for sustainable waste management on a bigger canvas. He joined Ramky Enviro Engineers Limited, India’s largest environmental management company, as Managing Director.
“Being in government helped me understand the regulatory challenges. In the corporate sector, I could now implement practical, large-scale solutions,” he recalls.
At Ramky, Ravi Kant led some of the nation’s most ambitious projects, including India’s largest Municipal Solid Waste facility at Jawaharnagar, Hyderabad. Designed to process 8,000 tons of waste daily, the facility features bio-mining, aerobic composting, RDF-secured landfill, and a 19.8 MW Waste-to-Energy plant, making it a model for municipal waste management across India.
Expanding Horizons: Academic and Consulting Roles
Ravi Kant’s career extends beyond operations. As Director General of the Administrative Staff College of India, Hyderabad, he trained civil servants in management and governance. Since 2016, he has served as Director of Voyants Solutions Private Limited, an infrastructure consulting firm advising governments and corporations on environmental planning, waste management, and municipal services in India and abroad.
A Legacy of Sustainable Innovation
Ravi Kant’s approach is rooted in partnerships, technology, and people-centric planning. He stresses that waste management cannot be a one-off effort; it requires systems thinking and community engagement.
“To ensure sustainable waste management, planning for the future has to start today. The seeds we sow now will grow into strong systems for generations,” he shared with Indian Masterminds.
His journey from IIT Roorkee to IAS to corporate leadership exemplifies how expertise and commitment can transform urban landscapes.
