In another move towards becoming India’s smartest and most citizen-friendly city, Gurugram has made history by launching the country’s first QR code-based traffic challan payment kiosk. The digital initiative is designed to make paying challans faster, contactless, and fully transparent—marking a bold step toward smarter urban governance.
The innovative system, developed jointly by the Gurugram Police and the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) under a CSR initiative, was inaugurated at Ambience Mall by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic).
How the QR-Based Kiosk Works
Motorists can easily check and pay their outstanding challans by entering their vehicle registration number on the kiosk screen. The system then displays pending challans, which can be instantly settled through UPI or other QR-enabled digital payments.
Pending challans that are under court process or over 90 days old are excluded from kiosk payments, ensuring regulatory compliance.
“For the first time in India, citizens can pay traffic challans through a QR-based kiosk. This initiative reduces police workload and empowers citizens with a quick, digital, and transparent option,”
said DCP (Traffic) Rajesh Mohan.
Pilot Launch and Expansion Plans
The Ambience Mall installation marks the pilot phase of the project. If successful, similar kiosks will soon be deployed at metro stations, malls, markets, and parking areas across Gurugram.
Officials say the system will reduce queues at traffic offices and help automate the city’s challan management system—cutting manual errors, saving time, and improving compliance rates.
Smart Safety & Emergency Features
Each kiosk isn’t just a payment station—it’s also a 24×7 safety hub.
Equipped with beacon lights, CCTV integration, and a video-based emergency call system directly linked to Dial 112 and the Police Commissioner’s Control Room, citizens can instantly connect with the police during emergencies with a one-touch video call.
The system was successfully tested by Police Commissioner Vikas Arora and DCP Rajesh Mohan during a live demonstration of the city’s Smart Emergency Response Network.
Towards AI-Driven Traffic Governance
According to officials, this marks just the beginning of Gurugram’s smart traffic transformation. Future plans include integrating the kiosks with AI-powered analytics, facial recognition, and real-time data-sharing systems to monitor traffic violations more effectively and ensure public safety.
This initiative aligns with the Smart City Mission’s vision of creating digitally empowered, citizen-centric urban systems.
Gurugram Sets a National Benchmark
By merging technology, transparency, and convenience, Gurugram has become India’s first city to digitize challan payments end-to-end through self-service kiosks.
It’s a step that not only reduces human intervention and corruption risks but also strengthens data-driven policing—paving the way for other Indian cities to follow.
With this launch, Gurugram once again proves why it’s called “India’s Millennium City” — where innovation meets governance for a smarter, safer, and more digital future.
