Delhi is set to witness a new era of smart policing, as the Delhi Police has received 75 advanced surveillance drones from Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women (IGDTUW). This initiative marks a major step towards strengthening technology-driven security in the national capital, home to over 20 million citizens.

The drones, handed over on the occasion of the 75th birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, include 1 large, 15 medium, and 59 small surveillance drones, making the system flexible for different policing needs.

Women to Lead the Command
In a standout achievement, 108 women police personnel have been specially trained under the initiative “Netra-Netrutva-Naari” (Vision-Leadership-Women) to operate and manage these drones. This highlights a major push for women-led policing in technology roles, symbolizing empowerment and modern leadership.

Where Will These Drones Be Used?

The drones will be deployed across:

All 15 police districts

Crime Branch

Traffic Police

Railways & Metro Units

For purposes including:

High-altitude surveillance

Crowd management during festivals & markets

Crime scene documentation

Disaster response operations

Designed with Academic–Police Collaboration

These drones were developed/assembled by girl students of IGDTUW with industry support, showcasing the success of academia–governance partnerships in innovation.
A formal MoU was also signed between Delhi Police and IGDTUW to continue collaboration in emerging technologies such as:

●Drone operations

●Data analytics

●Image processing

●Blockchain analysis

Privacy & Safety Assured

Delhi Police has already drafted Standard Operating Procedures to ensure:

Data security

Human rights safeguards

Compliance with Drone Rules 2021

No unauthorized personal surveillance

A Safer, Smarter Delhi
This initiative reflects a future where policing goes beyond patrolling – using technology to predict, prevent, and respond to challenges swiftly. As officials stated, this partnership strengthens the mission of building a safer and smarter Delhi for all.
