In a year marked by wars, political instability, rising extremism, and social unrest, the Global Peace Index 2024 delivers a rare breath of optimism—spotlighting the countries that continue to remain pillars of calm, safety, and harmony. At a time when headlines are dominated by conflict, this report reminds the world that peace is not only possible—it is thriving in several corners of the globe.

Covering 163 countries, representing 99.7% of the world’s population, the Global Peace Index evaluates nations on critical indicators such as crime rates, militarisation, political stability, internal conflict, and international relations. And just like previous years, one nation continues to wear the crown.

Iceland: The World’s Most Peaceful Nation Yet Again
For the 17th consecutive year, Iceland tops the global rankings. With:

●Near-zero crime,

●High social trust,

●Strong governance, and

●Minimal military engagement,

Iceland stands as a remarkable example of what long-term peace looks like—proof that stability can be a way of life.

Top 10 Most Peaceful Countries in 2024

1 Iceland
2 Ireland
3 Austria
4 New Zealand
5 Singapore
6 Switzerland
7 Portugal
8 Denmark
9 Slovenia
10 Malaysia

While Europe dominates the top 10, one striking highlight is Malaysia, which emerges as one of Asia’s safest and most harmonious nations—an impressive feat in a region facing geopolitical tensions, territorial disputes, and rising military posturing.

Regional Peace Champions
Canada (11th) leads North America with its inclusive policies and low violence.

Japan (17th) remains the calmest in East Asia, reflecting strong societal discipline and governance.

Bhutan (21st) stands out in South Asia, reinforcing its reputation as the nation that values “Gross National Happiness” over aggression.

Norway (28th) continues to stay among the world’s safest Nordic nations despite turbulent global shifts.

What Makes These Countries Peaceful?

Experts credit their success to:
●Low crime and violence
● Strong democratic institutions
● High social trust and community bonding
● Stable economies
● Limited involvement in external conflicts
● Policies focused on well-being and quality of life

These nations invest more in people, health, education, and social harmony than in weapons and warfare—a model the world can learn from.

A Powerful Reminder
As global conflicts escalate and millions face displacement and insecurity, the 2024 index delivers a crucial message: peace is measurable, achievable, and worth prioritising.

It also challenges world leaders to rethink development—not just through economic growth, but through human safety, dignity, and harmony.

In a divided world, these peaceful nations stand as beacons of hope—proving that calm is possible, coexistence is real, and the dream of a peaceful planet is still alive.
