New Delhi: Mukesh Ambani’s Jio Platforms has achieved a major milestone on its stock market debut, emerging as India’s most widely held listed company by the number of shareholders. Following its initial public offering (IPO), the company’s shareholder base surged to approximately 79.6 lakh, or nearly 80 lakh investors. Before the IPO, Jio had only 104 shareholders. The dramatic expansion marks an extraordinary increase in its investor base and highlights the growing participation of retail investors in India’s equity markets.

Jio shares were listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) on October 28. The stock opened at ₹1,358, representing a 21.36% premium over its issue price of ₹1,119. During the trading session, the company’s market capitalisation reached approximately ₹12.53 lakh crore, making it India’s second-most valuable listed company after its parent, Reliance Industries. At the close of the first day’s trading, Jio shares stood at ₹1,417.35, up 4.37% from the listing price.

Jio Surpasses Major Companies in Shareholder Numbers

With approximately 79.6 lakh shareholders, Jio has overtaken several established companies that have built substantial retail investor bases over many years. According to the available figures, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles has around 66.3 lakh shareholders. Vodafone Idea has approximately 57.9 lakh, followed by Yes Bank with nearly 57.6 lakh. Suzlon Energy has about 56 lakh shareholders.

Tata Steel has approximately 51.4 lakh shareholders, while Reliance Industries has around 50.7 lakh. Indian Railway Finance Corporation has nearly 50.1 lakh shareholders, Jio Financial Services has approximately 49.7 lakh, and HDFC Bank has around 48.1 lakh.

These figures underline the scale of Jio’s shareholder expansion following its market debut. However, a larger shareholder base does not necessarily mean lower investment risk or guarantee stronger future stock performance.

India’s Largest IPO Attracts Massive Investor Demand

The surge in Jio’s shareholder count follows an exceptionally strong response to its IPO. The public issue received more than 1.38 crore applications, while total demand generated through the anchor investor and public book-building processes reportedly reached approximately ₹7.4 lakh crore.

Before the offering, Jio had only 104 shareholders. Its ownership was primarily concentrated among Reliance Industries and major global investors, including Meta, Google, KKR and Silver Lake. The IPO opened an opportunity for a much wider pool of investors to acquire shares in the company, significantly expanding its shareholder base.

The public issue comprised 27 crore newly issued shares, with no offer for sale by existing shareholders. The company planned to raise ₹27,500 crore through the issue.

The strong demand reflects substantial investor interest in Jio’s telecommunications and digital services businesses. Its market debut has also brought renewed attention to the scale of India’s retail investment market and the growing appetite for shares of major technology-driven businesses.

Jio’s Shareholder Base Far Exceeds Those of Major IPOs

Several large Indian companies have attracted millions of investors through their public offerings in recent years. However, Jio’s shareholder count is substantially higher than those of these companies.

Bajaj Housing Finance raised ₹6,560 crore through its September 2024 IPO, which was subscribed more than 67 times. The company had approximately 23.1 lakh shareholders during its first quarter after listing. By September 2026, the number had declined to around 22.4 lakh.

The Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) raised ₹20,557 crore through its IPO in 2022. As of September 2026, it had approximately 21.7 lakh shareholders.

Hyundai Motor India launched its ₹27,870 crore IPO in October 2024, making it the country’s largest IPO before Jio’s market debut. The company had around 7.2 lakh shareholders in September 2026. LG Electronics India had approximately 8.2 lakh shareholders, while Tata Capital had around 11.5 lakh during the same period.

Compared with these figures, Jio’s shareholder base of nearly 80 lakh represents a significant milestone in the Indian stock market.

Reliance’s Retail Investor Legacy Extends to Digital Business

Reliance Group has maintained a longstanding relationship with Indian retail investors. Founder Dhirubhai Ambani championed broader equity ownership among Indian households, encouraging ordinary investors to participate in the stock market. Jio’s listing extends that legacy to the group’s telecommunications and digital services business.

Following the IPO, Reliance Industries continues to hold approximately 64.4% of Jio Platforms. Meta and Google are also among the company’s major investors.

During the listing ceremony, Jio Platforms director Anant Ambani acknowledged the company’s new shareholders and thanked investors and customers for supporting its growth. His remarks highlighted the importance of the expanded investor base as Jio enters its next phase as a publicly traded company.

Jio’s stock market debut underscores investor interest in India’s telecommunications and digital economy. However, the company’s future share performance will depend on several factors, including revenue growth, profitability, competition, investment requirements and broader market conditions.

While the expansion from 104 shareholders to nearly 80 lakh represents a remarkable corporate milestone, investors will also need to assess the company’s financial performance and valuation when evaluating its long-term prospects.
