JAIPUR: A major breach in Rajasthan’s open jail monitoring system has surfaced after Dikshaant Kamra, a convict serving a life sentence in the notorious Dushyant Sharma murder case, travelled to Thailand for a five-day vacation while official prison records falsely logged his regular physical presence. The convicted murderer departed on October 9, 2025, and returned on October 13, 2025, without any record of his absence being noted by supervisory authorities. Rules governing open air camps require prisoners to present themselves for biometric or roll-call attendance twice daily, both in the morning and evening. Despite this binding procedure, Kamra remained away on international travel for five consecutive days without triggering an immediate institutional alarm. The matter came to light only after a formal complaint prompted an inquiry into his movements, exposing systemic lapses and possible official connivance within the Sri Ganganagar open prison setup.
Passports Retained Despite Conviction and Fresh Opium Recovery
The international trip was facilitated by the convict using an active Indian passport that police failed to impound following his initial arrest. Travel documents confirm that Kamra’s passport had been issued in 2016 from his permanent residential address in Padampur, located within Sri Ganganagar district. Jaipur’s Jhotwara police arrested him in 2018 in connection with the abduction and murder of Dushyant, yet law enforcement agencies never confiscated the booklet. Even after a trial court convicted him and awarded a life sentence in 2023, authorities made no effort to track or impound his travel credentials. Armed with this uncancelled document, he freely crossed international borders in October 2025. Kamra’s operational liberties were further highlighted two days ago when local police intercepted his private vehicle in Sri Ganganagar and confiscated forty grams of opium. A criminal case under the relevant narcotics provisions was subsequently registered at Jawahar Nagar police station.
Lax Oversight Exposes Complicity Among Prison Personnel
The unauthorized foreign trip has focused intense administrative scrutiny on internal protocols and supervisory personnel responsible for guarding the open camp. Under established statutory guidelines, inmates held in open detention centres must mark their attendance twice every day. Prison authorities never reported Kamra missing, nor did they approach local police stations to register an official first information report regarding an absconding inmate while he was away in Thailand. Senior officials pointed out that an absence spanning several days could not have gone entirely unnoticed without the direct assistance and tacit protection of staff members on duty. Director General of Prisons Ashok Rathore confirmed the development, noting that a departmental probe has commenced alongside formal criminal proceedings against both the prisoner and negligent departmental staff. Investigators are currently questioning jail wardens and clerks to establish precisely who stamped and logged his morning and evening presence during those dates.
Brutal Honeytrap Case Culminated in Life Imprisonment
Kamra was originally convicted for his central role in the 2018 kidnapping and murder of Dushyant, an incident that shocked Jaipur. According to police records, Kamra’s romantic partner, Priya Seth, targeted the victim through an online dating platform to extort funds needed to settle Kamra’s outstanding financial debts. The duo abducted Dushyant from Jhotwara and demanded a ransom of ten lakh rupees from his father. After successfully collecting three lakh rupees from the panicked family, the conspirators strangled Dushyant, mutilated his facial features using knives to destroy identifiable physical evidence, packed his body into a suitcase, and discarded the remains across the hills of Amer. The trial court handed life terms to both convicts in 2023. While serving her respective sentence, Seth later married an inmate named Hanuman inside the prison premises, while Kamra secured a transfer to an open camp where lax oversight enabled his international departure.
