Passengers across India can now enjoy seamless, high-speed internet while waiting for their trains, as Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announces that free Wi-Fi services are now available at 6,115 railway stations nationwide. The move aims to enhance travel comfort and keep commuters connected, whether for work, entertainment, or staying in touch with loved ones.
In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Minister Vaishnaw revealed that almost all Indian Railways stations already enjoy 4G/5G mobile network coverage from telecom providers, ensuring robust connectivity. The newly expanded Wi-Fi service, powered by RailTel’s ‘RailWire’ brand, adds another layer of convenience for passengers.
How to Access Free RailWire Wi-Fi
1. Switch on Wi-Fi mode on your smartphone.
2. Connect to the network ‘RailWire’.
3. Enter your mobile number to receive an OTP via SMS.
4. Use the OTP to log in and enjoy unlimited browsing.
With this upgrade, passengers can now stream HD videos, download entertainment, work remotely, or attend virtual meetings while waiting for their train.
Coverage Across All Tiers of Cities
The free Wi-Fi service spans major Tier 1 hubs like New Delhi, Mumbai Central, Chennai Central, Pune, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, and Hyderabad. It also covers Tier 2 cities such as Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Meerut, and Bhopal, as well as Tier 3 towns like Rohtak and Cuttack — making it a truly nationwide initiative.
From Collaboration to Self-Sufficiency
RailTel, a public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Railways, had earlier partnered with Google and Tata Trusts to roll out the service. Now, the PSU is independently managing and expanding the network, ensuring sustainable operations.
Interestingly, RailTel has been making headlines beyond connectivity — in April 2025, it bagged a ₹90.08 crore order from the Institute of Road Transport, and its stock has delivered over 140% returns to investors in the past five years.
With the rollout of free Wi-Fi across thousands of stations, Indian Railways is stepping up its digital transformation — turning waiting time into productive, entertaining, and connected moments for millions of travellers.
