In a major push to improve pedestrian safety and ease traffic congestion, the Noida Authority has laid the foundation stone for a 530-metre-long circular skywalk at the busy Sector 62 roundabout, one of the city’s most crowded office and transit hubs. The ₹26-crore project is designed to provide a grade-separated pedestrian corridor, allowing people to cross the junction without disrupting vehicular movement.
Officials said the skywalk is expected to be completed within 18 months and will significantly reduce accident risks at the intersection, which witnesses heavy footfall throughout the day.
Circular Design Chosen Over Conventional Footbridge
Unlike a traditional straight foot overbridge, the proposed structure will feature a 350-metre circular stretch running above the roundabout, along with a 180-metre straight segment. The design mirrors the movement pattern of pedestrians at the junction, where people cross from multiple directions simultaneously.
A pedestrian movement study conducted by the Authority found that a linear bridge would not adequately serve the intersection, as it fails to accommodate the complex, multi-directional crossings common at large roundabouts.
Skywalk to Have Roof, Lifts and Escalators
To ensure comfort and accessibility, the skywalk will be covered with an iron roof, allowing use during rain and extreme summer heat. It will be equipped with stairs, lifts and escalators at four access points, with exits towards Sector 62, Sector 63, and both sides along NH-9.
Officials said the design will make the skywalk accessible for senior citizens, persons with disabilities, office-goers and students.
Over 50,000 Pedestrians Cross Junction Daily
A recent survey revealed that more than 50,000 pedestrians cross the Sector 62–63 roundabout every day. Many of them alight from buses and shared autos operating between Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad and Meerut, often crossing lanes of fast-moving traffic to reach offices, colleges, markets and transport points.
This daily movement frequently leads to traffic slowdowns, near-miss accidents and congestion during peak hours.
Relief for Office-Goers and Nearby Residential Areas
The skywalk is expected to benefit not only Noida residents but also commuters from Ghaziabad and Indirapuram, who rely heavily on the Sector 62 corridor. Officials said the structure will allow pedestrians to cross safely from all directions without stepping onto the road, improving traffic flow at the multi-lane junction.
By separating pedestrian and vehicular movement, the Authority hopes to cut crossing time and reduce chaos during office rush hours.
Part of Larger Model Road Plan
The skywalk project is part of Noida Authority’s broader plan to develop a 3.5-kilometre model road from Sector 62 to Mamura, a stretch that routinely faces congestion due to dense office clusters and nearby residential societies.
Officials said improving pedestrian infrastructure is a key component of reducing traffic pressure on major urban corridors and enhancing overall road safety.
