The sacred town of Puri transformed into a sea of devotion today as Jagannath Rath Yatra 2025 began with unmatched fervor and faith. Over a million devotees from across India and abroad gathered to witness one of the world’s largest and oldest religious processions, celebrating the divine journey of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra.

A Journey of Faith and Liberation

Held annually on the Dwitiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Ashadh, the Rath Yatra marks the ceremonial outing of the deities from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple, their maternal home. Devotees believe that even a glimpse of the Lord on his chariot cleanses lifetimes of sins and ensures spiritual liberation.

The iconic chariot-pulling ceremony, also known as Rathatana, began at 4:00 PM today, following rituals like Mangala Alati, Surya Puja, and the royal Chhera Pahanra by the Gajapati King of Puri.

Security, Rituals, and Massive Participation

To ensure smooth conduct, over 10,000 police personnel and 275 CCTV cameras were deployed by the Odisha government. A National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) unit was also stationed, considering the massive footfall.

The full schedule of this year’s Yatra includes:

Snana Purnima – June 11

Rath Yatra – June 27

Bahuda Yatra – July 5

Suna Besha – July 6

Niladri Bijay – July 8

A Spectacle of Devotion and Culture

The sound of cymbals, conches, and chants of “Jai Jagannath” filled the air as the three majestic wooden chariots rolled forward. The 2025 Yatra continues the centuries-old tradition that blends mythology, art, and spirituality in a grand public celebration.

As part of their corporate social responsibility, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has also stepped in to offer essential services to the pilgrims, ensuring comfort and safety during the festivities.
