Wedding Reception Without the Bride & Groom? IndiGo Cancellation Turns Celebration

In a bizarre yet heartwarming twist, an Indian couple ended up attending their much-awaited wedding reception virtually, after IndiGo’s massive flight cancellations left them stranded nearly 1,500 km away from the venue.

The couple — Medha Kshirsagar from Hubballi and Sangam Das from Bhubaneswar — had tied the knot just days earlier. A grand reception for over 600 guests was arranged at Gujarat Bhavan in Hubballi. But when IndiGo abruptly cancelled their flight amid nationwide disruptions, the couple watched their own reception unfold — from a hotel room, dressed in wedding attire, waving through a screen.

Their unusual celebration is now going viral, being hailed as the perfect example of “modern problem, modern solution.”

The Wedding Was in Bhubaneswar — The Reception Was 1,500 km Away
The couple married on November 23 in Bhubaneswar. The Hubballi reception was planned as the bigger celebration, complete with elaborate decorations, a floral stage, live music and professional photography.

By the evening of December 2, everything was ready.

Except the bride and groom.

IndiGo Delays… Delays… and Finally Cancels

Medha and Sangam were scheduled to fly from Bhubaneswar to Bengaluru and then connect to Hubballi. But trouble began early in the morning — their flight kept getting pushed back.

Hours turned into an entire day. Passengers waited helplessly. By December 3, IndiGo finally cancelled the flight as part of a nationwide meltdown that affected nearly 200 flights.

With no alternative route available, the couple realised they had no way to reach Hubballi in time.

Reception Starts Without the Couple — Family Responds With Quick Thinking
In Hubballi, hundreds of guests had already arrived. The lights were on, the hall was buzzing — but the stage chairs remained empty.

Once the cancellation was confirmed, the family decided to improvise.

A large screen was brought on stage. A video call was initiated. The hall erupted in applause as the bride and groom appeared on screen — smiling from their Bhubaneswar hotel room.

A Virtual Reception Comes Alive
Wearing their reception outfits, Medha and Sangam spent the next two hours greeting guests virtually:

●Guests lined up to bless them on screen

●Children waved excitedly

●Some even took “selfies” with the giant projected image

●The couple laughed, cried, and interacted live with everyone

The event turned unexpectedly emotional — and surprisingly fun.

Soon, videos of the unique celebration began flooding social media, making the couple internet celebrities overnight.

“Technology Saved Our Day” — Bride’s Father

Speaking to the media, Medha’s father said:

> “We had prepared for this day for weeks. When the flight was cancelled, it felt devastating. But technology bridged the gap. It truly saved our day.”

The groom added:
“We’re both software engineers… so we thought: if a bug ruins your plan, you use tech to fix it. And that’s exactly what we did.”

Nationwide Aviation Turmoil
IndiGo has faced severe backlash after widespread cancellations caused chaos across multiple cities. DGCA has sought a detailed report, while the airline has attributed the disruptions to “operational issues” and crew shortages.

A Story That Proves Love — and Wi-Fi — Conquers All
Despite being physically separated, Medha and Sangam’s reception proved that love can still find a way, even through a digital screen. Their story has now become a viral symbol of resilience, humour, and modern love.

Social media captions say it best:

“When flights fail, Wi-Fi prevails.”
“Love in the time of IndiGo cancellations.”
