Delhi recorded its cleanest air since 2020 during 2025, marking a significant milestone in the city’s fight against pollution. The Delhi government has attributed this improvement to strict enforcement measures, including fines on over 1.2 million polluting vehicles and rigorous implementation of BS-VI emission norms.
According to Delhi’s Environment Minister, the improvement is the result of sustained, multi-pronged action taken soon after the government assumed office. With the exception of the COVID-19 year 2020, pollution levels in 2025 were the lowest since 2018, reflecting the impact of aggressive policy execution on the ground.
Strict Action Against Vehicular Pollution
To curb emissions from vehicles, the government implemented a “No PUC, No Fuel” policy, ensuring that vehicles without valid Pollution Under Control certificates are denied fuel. In the last 24 hours alone, over 12,000 challans were issued, while the total number of vehicle challans crossed 12 lakh since October 1, 2025.
Authorities also cracked down on BS-VI norm violations, issuing penalties to vehicles found flouting emission standards. Trucks transporting construction debris in open conditions were fined heavily, and enforcement against non-compliant industrial units was intensified.

Dust Control and Anti-Smog Measures
Dust pollution emerged as another key focus area. The government increased mechanised road sweeping, installed 405 anti-smog guns, and carried out regular water sprinkling in high-traffic zones. Construction sites were placed under strict compliance rules, with action taken against violators.
Waste Management Reforms
Significant progress was also reported in waste management. Efforts are underway to eliminate landfill mountains, improve garbage segregation, and ensure scientific disposal of waste—steps aimed at delivering long-term environmental benefits.
More Measures on the Way
Officials have assured that the government will continue to tighten pollution-control norms and strengthen enforcement in the coming months to ensure Delhi’s air quality improves further and remains sustainable.
