In a significant move aimed at reviving business engagement and easing investment-related travel, India has introduced a new e-Production Investment Business Visa (e-B-4 Visa) for Chinese nationals. The initiative is part of a broader effort by both countries to take people-centric steps toward stabilising and gradually resetting bilateral ties.
According to an advisory issued by the Indian Embassy in Beijing, the new visa category came into effect on January 1, 2026, and can be applied for entirely online—eliminating the need for applicants to visit the embassy or approach intermediaries.
What the New e-B-4 Visa Allows
The e-B-4 Visa is specifically designed for production-linked and investment-driven business activities. Chinese professionals and businesspersons can use this visa for:
●Installation and commissioning of equipment
●Quality inspection and testing
●Essential maintenance work
●Production-related activities
●Information Technology and technical services
Once approved, the visa allows a stay of up to six months in India. The processing time is estimated to be 45 to 50 days from the date of application, offering a predictable timeline for companies planning cross-border operations.
A Step Towards Economic Normalisation
The introduction of this visa reflects India’s intent to facilitate controlled and purpose-driven business travel, particularly in sectors where Chinese equipment, technical expertise, and manufacturing support are involved. It also aligns with India’s focus on strengthening domestic production, industrial capacity, and technology-linked investments.
In recent months, India and China have agreed on several confidence-building and people-oriented measures to improve communication channels and reduce friction, especially in economic and trade-related engagements.

Fully Digital Application Process
The Indian Embassy clarified that applications for the e-B-4 Visa must be submitted online, making the process transparent and efficient. Authorities emphasised that applicants should carefully ensure that their travel purpose strictly matches the permitted categories under this visa.
Balancing Opportunity with Oversight
While the visa opens doors for legitimate business travel, it also signals India’s calibrated approach—encouraging investment and technical collaboration while maintaining regulatory oversight and national interest safeguards.
As global supply chains continue to realign and India positions itself as a manufacturing and technology hub, the e-B-4 Visa could play a crucial role in facilitating targeted foreign participation without compromising policy control.
