After Months of Controls, Stage-2 Anti-Pollution Measures Withdrawn in NCR

Residents of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) received a breather as authorities revoked Stage-2 restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) following a noticeable improvement in air quality. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) announced the decision after monitoring pollution levels and weather conditions.
Stage-2 curbs had been in force since October, reflecting months of severe pollution concerns across the region.

AQI Shows Downward Trend
According to official data, Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) dropped significantly, moving from higher “poor” levels toward the “moderate” category. On Thursday morning, the city’s average AQI was recorded at 164 — a level considered far less hazardous than the “very poor” category that triggers stricter measures.
Officials attributed the improvement largely to favourable meteorological conditions, including wind movement and atmospheric changes that helped disperse pollutants.

Stage-1 Measures to Remain in Force
Despite the relaxation, authorities have not completely lifted pollution controls. Preventive actions under Stage-1 of GRAP will continue to remain in place to prevent a fresh spike in pollution levels.
These measures include strict dust control at construction sites, mechanised road sweeping, water sprinkling on roads, proper waste management, and intensified monitoring of polluting vehicles and industries.

Forecast Suggests Stable but Vulnerable Air Quality
Experts warned that while conditions have improved, the situation remains fragile. Forecasts indicate that air quality may fluctuate between “moderate” and “poor” categories in the coming days, meaning any adverse weather or increased emissions could worsen pollution again.
Authorities said continuous monitoring will guide future decisions on whether stricter curbs need to be reimposed.

Residents Cautiously Welcome Relief
For millions living in the NCR, the easing of restrictions offers some respite from months of stringent controls that affected construction, transport, and daily life. However, environmental experts emphasise that long-term solutions — including emission control, urban planning, and cleaner transport — remain critical.
The latest development underscores both the progress made and the persistent vulnerability of Delhi-NCR’s air quality.
