NEW DELHI: Air travel has become significantly more expensive ahead of Diwali, putting a severe financial burden on festive travelers as domestic airfares across several key routes have surged between two and seven times compared to normal periods. The steep hike is most prominent on major metro routes, where peak travel slots are commanding unprecedented rates. On the Delhi-Kolkata corridor, where fares usually hover between 10,000 and 11,000 rupees on regular days, ticket prices for peak hours around November 6 have spiked to as much as 78,694 rupees.
Sharp Fare Hikes Recorded Across Major Metro Sectors
A widespread price escalation has been observed across primary transit corridors nationwide. On the Mumbai-Delhi route, airfares have risen to 60,577 rupees during peak rush hours, compared to an average baseline of 11,531 rupees on normal days. Similarly, travel between Bengaluru and Delhi has seen tickets rise from a regular fare of 15,901 rupees to 40,506 rupees during high-demand hours.
The price surge is equally severe on routes originating from the national capital. Fares on the Delhi-Hyderabad sector have jumped from a regular rate of 8,935 rupees to 27,895 rupees during busy slots. For the Delhi-Ahmedabad route, where standard pricing stands around 6,121 rupees, peak tickets have reached 23,413 rupees. Passengers flying from Delhi to Bengaluru face peak tariffs of 26,838 rupees against a normal rate of 8,978 rupees, while Delhi-Mumbai services have witnessed tickets rising from 5,223 rupees to 26,793 rupees.
Departure Timings and Airline Choices Cause Wide Disparities
The time of departure has emerged as a critical factor in determining the price of travel on identical dates and routes. Morning flights are generally commanding lower prices than afternoon and evening services, which carry steep premiums due to concentrated traveler preferences.
On the Bengaluru-Delhi sector on November 6, an early morning flight departing at 5:00 am was available for approximately 15,901 rupees. However, a service scheduled on the very same route at 3:45 pm on the same day climbed to 26,838 rupees. Wide variations driven by timing and carrier selections have also been documented on non-metro connections, including regional corridors such as Bhopal-Lucknow and Dehradun-Lucknow. Because lower-priced inventory is rapidly exhausted by early purchasers, passengers booking flights at peak slots are left with exceptionally high tariffs.
Festive Homebound Rush and Dynamic Pricing Fuel Escalation
The substantial price rise is primarily driven by massive seasonal demand, as professionals, workers, and traders stationed outside their native cities travel back home to celebrate Diwali. This sudden concentration of journey dates puts immense pressure on flight seat availability across major domestic networks.
Airlines operate dynamic pricing algorithms where fares automatically climb as seat availability diminishes. Once initial batches of low-cost tickets are sold out, subsequent travelers are forced to purchase tickets at upper-tier fare bands. The situation is further aggravated on routes where direct connections and overall passenger seating capacity remain strictly limited. In addition, constraints on total domestic flight capacity combined with elevated jet fuel expenses continue to add underlying cost pressures to overall air travel operations.
