At the recently held Aadhaar Samvaad 2024 event in New Delhi, Meghalaya received two national awards from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), marking a significant achievement in the delivery of citizen-centric digital services.
The event took place on April 8 at the Bharat Mandapam Convention Centre.
Categories of Recognition
Meghalaya was awarded in the following categories:
- Best Performing State in Mandatory Biometric Updates of Children
- Excellence in Verification of Adult Aadhaar Enrolment
These awards underscore Meghalaya’s focused efforts on making Aadhaar services inclusive, secure, and reliable across different age groups.
Recognition of Digital Governance
The awards were received by Shai Kupar War, Nodal Officer (Aadhaar), from the General Administration Department (GAD) of Meghalaya. His department has played a key role in the successful implementation of Aadhaar-related initiatives in the state.
This recognition points to the state’s ability to implement digital identity systems efficiently, especially in regions with logistical and infrastructural challenges.
Chief Minister Praises the Team’s Efforts
Reacting to the achievement, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma congratulated the team via his official handle on X (formerly Twitter):
“These recognitions reflect the unwavering commitment and hard work of our team in delivering inclusive and reliable Aadhaar services across the state. Heartfelt congratulations to everyone involved.”
His remarks highlight the government’s focus on ensuring digital services reach every corner of the state, especially in tribal and rural areas where Aadhaar enrolment and updates can face challenges.
Why It Matters
Aadhaar is a foundational identity service in India, and efficient enrolment and verification are critical to ensuring:
- Access to government subsidies and benefits
- Smooth delivery of digital financial services
- Reduced identity fraud and duplication
- Better targeting of welfare schemes
By improving both child biometric updates and adult verification, Meghalaya strengthens the accuracy and inclusivity of its Aadhaar records.
