Is your random blood sugar level of 97 mg/dL something to worry about? According to leading doctors, it’s actually a good sign—your body is managing its blood glucose levels well.
A Random Blood Sugar (RBS) test measures glucose at any time of the day, regardless of when you last ate. Experts say a reading below 140 mg/dL is generally considered normal. At 97 mg/dL, your body is functioning efficiently, reducing the risk of prediabetes or diabetes.
“A reading of 97 mg/dL shows your body is regulating sugar levels properly,” said Dr. Hiran S Reddy, consultant physician and diabetologist at Gleneagles Hospital, Hyderabad.
However, doctors caution that one normal reading doesn’t guarantee long-term health. You must continue monitoring, especially if you have risk factors like obesity, family history, or an inactive lifestyle.
When Is Blood Sugar a Concern?
Prediabetic range: 101–125 mg/dL (fasting), 140–199 mg/dL (post-meal)
Diabetes: 126+ mg/dL (fasting), 200+ mg/dL (post-meal)
HbA1c levels offer a longer-term view:
Normal: Below 5.7%
Prediabetic: 5.7%–6.4%
Diabetic: 6.5% and above
“Stable blood sugar today doesn’t mean you’re risk-free forever,” said Dr. Rajiv Kovil, head of diabetology at Zandra Healthcare. “Routine checks, a healthy diet, and exercise are crucial.”
