A controversy has erupted at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) after students of Periyar Hostel alleged that the hostel warden carried out unauthorised construction on the lawn of official residential quarters, triggering strong objections and a formal complaint to the university administration.
According to students, a permanent tin-sheathed structure was constructed for domestic staff without obtaining mandatory administrative approval. They claim the move violates university housing norms and amounts to encroachment on common hostel land meant for collective use by residents.
Encroachment on Common Space Raises Concerns
Photographs shared by students show a structure with extended boundary walls that significantly reduce visibility from outside the hostel premises. Residents allege that the construction has eaten into shared open space, setting a worrying precedent for misuse of common property.
Students argue that while such private construction was allowed, basic shared facilities inside the hostel remain neglected. They pointed out that recreational infrastructure like the gymnasium, TV room, and common areas are poorly maintained despite repeated requests for upgrades.
Claims of Unequal Resource Allocation
The complaint also highlights alleged disparities in resource distribution. Students claimed a 6,000-litre water tank was installed exclusively for the warden’s residence, while a much smaller 2,000-litre tank caters to an entire hostel wing housing dozens of students. They say the imbalance reflects preferential treatment and administrative insensitivity toward student needs.
More Irregularities Alleged
In addition to the disputed structure, students allege that other unauthorised alterations have taken place within the hostel premises. These include the creation of a private parking area and additional bathrooms without official sanction. An iron gate that allegedly blocked a hostel road was later removed following student objections.

University Seeks Explanation
JNU officials have reportedly sought an explanation from the hostel warden regarding the construction. The administration has said the matter is under review and assured that appropriate action will be taken if violations are confirmed, including the possible removal of the structure.
This is not the first time students have raised concerns over encroachments and misuse of hostel spaces. Residents say the incident reflects deeper governance issues and the need for transparency and equal treatment within campus administration.
Students say the issue goes beyond one structure, raising questions about accountability, fairness, and the use of public institutional spaces. They have urged the university to ensure that rules apply equally to all and that student welfare remains a priority.
