Gurugram is set for a major expansion in its public transport network with the approval of 200 additional electric buses. The Gurugram Metropolitan Bus Limited (GMBCL) has identified 32 routes where these buses will be deployed, significantly strengthening connectivity across the city.
Officials said the expansion will enhance daily commuting options and improve last-mile connectivity, particularly in residential and commercial corridors that currently face limited bus coverage.
Infrastructure Readiness and Depot Development
To support the expanded fleet, infrastructure development is already underway. The electric bus depot in Sector 10 is operational, while another depot is being constructed in Sector 48 at a cost of ₹16 crore. A parking facility at the Sector 48 site is ready, and approval has been granted for a dedicated substation to support charging requirements.
A senior GMBCL official said the addition of 200 buses will help serve residents more efficiently. “We will be able to serve the city in a better way once these 200 buses are added to the fleet,” the official stated.
The new infrastructure is expected to ensure smooth operations, adequate charging capacity, and proper maintenance facilities for the growing electric fleet.
Operational Plan and Manpower Arrangements
Under the operational model, the company that secured the contract will provide drivers for the new electric buses. Conductors, however, will be arranged by GMBCL.
Officials confirmed that additional conductors will be hired through a government agency. “The bus corporation will hire additional conductors for the new buses, and we have asked the government agency to provide the manpower. In case these are not available, we will make additional arrangements,” an official said.
GMBCL CEO Vishwajit Choudhary said preparations are complete from the corporation’s side. “We are ready to operate these additional buses for the city residents. Infrastructure for the electric bus depot is ready in Sector 10, while the parking lot is ready in Sector 48,” he said.

Boost to Sustainable Urban Mobility
The expansion aligns with Haryana’s broader push toward sustainable and eco-friendly public transport solutions. With traffic congestion and pollution continuing to challenge Gurugram’s urban landscape, the addition of 200 electric buses is expected to reduce carbon emissions and promote greener commuting options.
Once operational, the expanded fleet is likely to improve frequency, reduce waiting times, and provide better accessibility to key employment hubs, residential sectors, and metro corridors.
With route planning completed and infrastructure nearing readiness, Gurugram’s public transport network is poised for one of its largest upgrades in recent years.
