In a landmark moment for India’s energy transition, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday inaugurated the country’s largest green hydrogen blending project in Gorakhpur. Developed by the Torrent Group, the facility is set to power households, vehicles, and industries with a cleaner, greener fuel mix—marking a bold step towards India’s net-zero ambitions.
Key Highlights of the Project
Annual Capacity: 72,000 tonnes of green hydrogen.
Blending Innovation: Up to 2% green hydrogen mixed with natural gas.
Distribution Reach: Existing pipelines to supply PNG for households, CNG for vehicles, and fuel for industries.
Coverage: Torrent Gas already operates 32 CNG stations, services over 12,000 homes, and supplies 73 industries across Gorakhpur, Sant Kabir Nagar, and Kushinagar.
Why This Matters
Unlike conventional grey hydrogen, green hydrogen is produced using renewable energy—making it 100% carbon-free. Blending it with natural gas will:
●Cut emissions significantly.
●Reduce pollution in cities.
●Lower household and transport fuel costs.
●Prepare industries for deep decarbonization.
Government’s Vision
CM Yogi Adityanath called the plant a milestone in Uttar Pradesh’s green energy roadmap, highlighting the state’s target of 1 million tonnes of annual green hydrogen production.
“With this plant’s inauguration, green hydrogen enters daily life—reaching our kitchens, vehicles, and industries,” he said.
He emphasized PNG’s safety and convenience, especially for women, and underlined how the shift to CNG is reducing transport pollution and fuel expenses.
Industry Perspective
Jinal Mehta, Director at Torrent Group, said the project is aligned with PM Narendra Modi’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, which envisions India as a global green hydrogen hub.
“This is the first step in our long-term vision to set up large-scale plants nationwide,” Mehta noted, calling hydrogen blending a scalable pathway to India’s net-zero targets.
The Bigger Picture
India launched its National Green Hydrogen Mission in 2023 to boost production, adoption, and export.
Uttar Pradesh is among the first states to operationalize this vision with a state-backed hydrogen policy.
Experts say Gorakhpur’s project could be a model for other states to replicate.
A Turning Point for India
The Gorakhpur Green Hydrogen Plant is not just infrastructure—it’s India’s clean energy future in action. From homes to highways, this project blends technology, policy, and sustainability into a roadmap for a greener tomorrow.
