India’s Medical Pricing System Under Scanner

A startling revelation has brought India’s healthcare pricing system under intense scrutiny. According to industry inputs shared with the government, patients in India are being forced to pay up to 25 times the actual factory or import cost of medical devices — raising serious concerns about transparency, ethics, and affordability in healthcare. The issue, highlighted by Association of Indian Medical Device Industry, has triggered what many are now calling a “medical fleecing” crisis.

The Reality Behind Medical Bills: “Mind the Gap”
The price difference between manufacturing cost and what patients ultimately pay is staggering.A simple syringe costing around Rs 6 at the factory level is sold at Rs 30, while an IV cannula priced at Rs 6 can reach Rs 120 in the market. The disparity becomes even more shocking with critical devices. A pacemaker costing Rs 25,000 at source is sold for nearly Rs 2 lakh, and a heart valve with a base cost of Rs 4 lakh can be billed at Rs 26 lakh. This massive gap highlights how healthcare costs can spiral far beyond the actual value of the product.

Why Are Prices So High? Industry Explains
According to domestic device manufacturers, this inflation is not always about profit at the manufacturing level. Instead, they claim that MRPs are deliberately kept high to accommodate margins across the supply chain, including hospitals, distributors, and retailers. In simple terms,
the system itself is structured in a way that pushes prices upward —and the final burden falls directly on the patient.

Patients Bear the Biggest Burden
For millions of families, medical emergencies are already financially devastating. When essential devices are priced multiple times higher than their actual cost, treatment becomes not just a health challenge, but a financial crisis. This issue becomes even more critical in life-saving procedures, where patients have little choice but to pay whatever is charged.

Transparency and Regulation Under Question
The revelation has reignited the debate around pricing regulation and transparency in India’s healthcare sector.
If the cost of devices can increase 10 to 25 times before reaching the patient, then questions arise:
●Who is monitoring these markups?
●Why is there no clear price control mechanism across all devices?
●And how can patients make informed decisions without transparency?

A Systemic Issue, Not an Isolated Problem
Experts believe this is not just about a few devices —
it reflects a larger systemic issue within healthcare pricing. From consumables to critical implants,
the lack of standardized pricing structures allows significant variation, often at the expense of patients.

Healthcare or High-Cost System?
This revelation is more than just a statistic —
it is a wake-up call for policymakers, regulators, and the public. When life-saving devices come with inflated price tags, the question is no longer just about healthcare access —it becomes about fairness and ethics in the system.Because in the end, healthcare should save lives — not drain them financially.
