In a bold step towards bridging India’s toughest connectivity gaps, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has unveiled a cutting-edge satellite phone that works without any cell towers, bringing calls, internet, and even UPI payments to the remotest corners of the country.
The device, IsatPhone 2, developed by global satellite leader Inmarsat, is now available in India exclusively through BSNL. Priced at about ₹90,000, this rugged device is aimed at security personnel, disaster management teams, mountaineers, and anyone operating in areas where mobile networks fail.
Key Features That Change the Game
Calls & SOS Messaging: Make emergency calls or send SOS messages even where mobile networks don’t exist.
Internet & Digital Payments: Access the internet and make UPI transactions, a first for a satellite phone in India.
Extreme Durability: Water-resistant, shockproof, and built to withstand harsh terrains.
Extended Battery Life: Optimized for days-long use in field conditions.

Pricing & Availability
BSNL has rolled out the IsatPhone 2 under different plans:
Government Users: ₹3,360 per month or ₹36,960 annually
Commercial Users: ₹5,600 per month or ₹61,600 annually
Initially restricted to government agencies, the satellite phone is now available to the general public through BSNL and its authorized stores.
Why It Matters
This launch marks a milestone for India’s digital infrastructure. Satellite-based connectivity ensures seamless communication in border areas, disaster zones, remote villages, forests, and high-altitude regions, where conventional networks fail.
Industry observers say the device could be a game-changer for emergency and digital communications, thanks to its integration of internet and UPI payments, making it much more than just an SOS tool.

A Part of BSNL’s Satellite-to-Device Vision
BSNL’s Satellite-to-Device (S2D) service, first introduced in November 2024, made satellite tech accessible to ordinary consumers. The new IsatPhone 2 builds on this vision, offering:
◆Reliable voice and data services
◆Secure communication channels
◆Digital empowerment for remote communities
A Big Leap for Digital India
As India pushes ahead with Digital India initiatives, BSNL’s satellite phone is poised to become a lifeline for first responders, travelers, and businesses operating off the grid. With its blend of reliability, internet access, and financial integration, this innovation may redefine connectivity standards nationwide.
