One of India’s most iconic landmarks, India Gate, is now witnessing a wave of visitor discontent following new restrictions that prohibit entry with food, bags, and pets—a move aimed at protecting the site’s lawns and security integrity.
Families and tourists arriving at the monument are being forced to split into groups, with some staying behind to guard belongings while others explore. With no locker facilities provided on-site, the lack of basic amenities has turned many visits into a frustrating experience.
“We travelled from Prayagraj, and now I’m waiting outside while my family tours inside. There are no lockers, so what else can we do?” said a disappointed tourist.
No Lockers, No Solution?
Unlike other heritage sites like the Red Fort or Qutub Minar, India Gate currently has no storage solution, leaving tourists stranded with their personal items. Security personnel at the entrance are strictly enforcing the new rule, adding to visitors’ distress.
Preservation vs. Public Comfort
According to officials, the regulations were introduced to protect the newly installed grass and landscaping, which had been repeatedly damaged due to crowd picnics, food littering, and sheet spreading.
A government source hinted at further potential restrictions, including a ban on video filming at the site.
Public Reacts
“These rules are understandable, but not without providing a solution like lockers,” said a visitor from Banaras.
Many urged authorities to balance security with convenience, especially for families traveling long distances to visit.
With the backlash growing, calls for urgent locker installations are echoing online and at the site itself. For now, India Gate remains a picture-perfect landmark—just not picnic-perfect anymore.
