Drainage Failure in Gurugram: Sectors 70–72 Turn Waterlogged After Light Rain

A brief spell of rain has once again exposed deep-rooted infrastructure issues in Gurugram, with residents of Sectors 70, 71, and 72 facing waterlogged roads, massive potholes, and clogged drainage systems. What should have been a routine drizzle turned into a daily nightmare for commuters, raising serious questions about construction quality and civic accountability.

Light Rain, Heavy Impact: Roads Turn Into Water Traps
Despite only light rainfall, several key stretches in these sectors were completely submerged, disrupting traffic and daily life.
One of the worst-hit areas is the road near CD International School in Sector 72, where heavy school-hour traffic combined with waterlogging created chaotic conditions. Vehicles were seen navigating through deep water pockets, increasing the risk of accidents and breakdowns.
Residents say this is no longer a seasonal issue—it has become a recurring civic failure.

Faulty Roadwork After Sewage Projects Blamed
Locals have pointed fingers at poor reconstruction work carried out after sewage pipeline installations.
Unmukt Sharma, a resident of Signature Global Andour Heights, highlighted that roads were never properly restored after digging.
According to residents:
●Roads are half-broken with uneven surfaces
●Large potholes have formed across key stretches
●Rainwater collects in these potholes, worsening traffic conditions
This combination of poor construction and water accumulation has made commuting not just inconvenient—but dangerous.

Plastic-Choked Drains Worsen Flooding Crisis
Adding to the problem is the failure of the drainage system. Stormwater drains, which were designed to prevent such situations, are currently blocked with plastic waste and debris.
Residents say:
●Drains are not cleaned regularly
●Garbage accumulation is choking water flow
●Even minor rainfall leads to immediate waterlogging
This reflects a larger issue of waste management and maintenance failure in rapidly growing urban sectors.

Delayed Projects Add to Residents’ Frustration
The situation is further aggravated by delays in stormwater drain construction projects.
Jaswant Rao stated that deadlines for the drainage project have been repeatedly extended, leaving residents to deal with incomplete infrastructure.
Authorities had earlier promised that these drains would:
●Prevent flooding during monsoons
●Improve water flow management
●Reduce road damage
However, with delays continuing, residents are losing confidence in timely completion.

Authorities Pass the Buck, No Clear Accountability
Perhaps the most concerning aspect is the lack of accountability among civic agencies.
When contacted:
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority cited ongoing work and future integration with master drains
The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram did not provide clear responsibility for drain cleaning
Instead of coordinated action, both agencies were seen shifting responsibility, leaving residents without immediate solutions.

Pollution and Dust Add to Urban Misery
Apart from waterlogging, ongoing construction activities in nearby areas are contributing to high dust levels, worsening air quality and making living conditions more uncomfortable.
Residents now face a double burden:
●Flooded roads during rains
●Dust pollution during dry days

A Warning Before Monsoon
This incident serves as an early warning ahead of the monsoon season. If light rain can cause such disruption, heavy rains could paralyse entire sectors.
The situation highlights:
●Poor urban planning execution
●Lack of maintenance systems
●Urgent need for inter-agency coordination
Without immediate corrective action, Gurugram risks facing severe flooding and traffic chaos in the coming months.
