New Delhi State-owned Bank of India has declared an outstanding loan account of Future Enterprises Ltd worth ₹575.40 crore as fraudulent. The bank disclosed the development on Monday, October 12, stating that the matter had been reported to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in accordance with regulatory requirements. The bank has already made provisions equivalent to the entire outstanding amount of ₹575.40 crore. The development has once again brought the financial difficulties of the Future Group, which has interests in the retail sector, into focus.
In a filing with the stock exchanges, Bank of India stated that the relevant non-performing asset (NPA) account had been classified as fraud under applicable regulatory provisions and the bank’s policy on determining and disclosing material events and information. The bank confirmed that the information had been reported to the RBI as required by regulations.
However, the bank’s disclosure did not provide detailed information about the specific circumstances behind the alleged fraud, the transactions involved or the individuals responsible. Declaring a loan account fraudulent is a regulatory action and does not, by itself, establish the criminal liability of any individual or company.
Full Provision Made Against Outstanding Amount
According to Bank of India, the outstanding amount in Future Enterprises’ account stands at ₹575.40 crore. The bank has already made provisions for the entire amount, accounting for the potential financial impact of the exposure in its books.
In banking, a loan account may be classified as a non-performing asset when repayments become significantly overdue or the account meets the applicable regulatory criteria. If an account is subsequently declared fraudulent following the relevant examination and regulatory process, the bank is required to report the matter to the appropriate authorities and the banking regulator.
In this case, Bank of India has confirmed that it reported the account’s classification to the RBI after declaring it fraudulent. The provision covering the entire outstanding amount means that the bank has already accounted for the exposure in its financial records. However, making a provision does not guarantee the actual recovery of the outstanding money.
Company Manages Investments Across Future Group Businesses
Future Enterprises Ltd has been one of the key companies within the Future Group. It has managed investments in various subsidiaries and joint ventures associated with the group. These businesses have included sectors such as insurance, textile manufacturing, supply chain management and logistics.
Companies within the group established a presence across India’s retail, wholesale, warehousing and logistics sectors. However, the group subsequently faced mounting financial pressure and significant business challenges.
The latest development involving Future Enterprises comes amid broader difficulties in restructuring the group’s operations and finding solutions for its financial liabilities. The company’s latest loan account classification has once again drawn attention to the financial challenges surrounding the group.
₹24,713 Crore Reliance Retail Deal Failed to Materialise
A major proposed business transaction announced in 2020 had been viewed as an important development for the Future Group’s financial position.
In August 2020, Reliance Industries announced a ₹24,713 crore deal to acquire and transfer the businesses of 19 Future Group companies operating in retail, wholesale, logistics and warehousing to Reliance Retail.
The proposed transaction had raised expectations that the group’s businesses could be restructured and its financial difficulties addressed. However, the deal failed to secure the necessary support from lenders. Reliance Industries subsequently cancelled the transaction in April.
Following the cancellation, uncertainty continued over the operations and financial liabilities of Future Group companies. Bank of India’s latest action comes against this broader financial backdrop. However, the available information does not establish a direct connection between the bank’s decision to declare the account fraudulent and the cancellation of the Reliance Retail deal.
Bank of India Shares Close Lower
Bank of India’s shares also recorded a decline in Monday’s trading session. On the BSE, the bank’s stock closed at ₹133.05, down ₹1.45, or 1.08 per cent, from the previous closing price.
The bank’s disclosure regarding the classification of Future Enterprises’ loan account and its subsequent reporting to the RBI was made under applicable regulatory requirements. Since provisions equivalent to the entire outstanding amount have already been made, the potential financial impact of this exposure has been accounted for in the bank’s books.
The next developments in the Future Enterprises case will depend on the applicable banking procedures, efforts to recover the outstanding amount and any further regulatory action.
For now, the declaration of the ₹575.40 crore account as fraudulent has renewed attention on Future Enterprises’ financial difficulties and the continuing challenges facing the wider Future Group as it seeks to address its liabilities and business uncertainties.
