Kolkata The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday conducted simultaneous searches at eight locations in Kolkata as part of an investigation into an alleged chit fund scam. Investigators suspect that money collected from thousands of investors through promises of high returns may have been diverted into real estate projects. The searches primarily focused on areas in south Kolkata, including Tollygunge and Sarat Bose Road.
According to sources familiar with the investigation, ED teams searched several premises in the presence of Central Armed Police Forces personnel. The operation forms part of a wider inquiry into the alleged misappropriation of investors’ money and the financial transactions associated with the suspected fraud.
Investigators are attempting to establish the total amount collected from investors, trace the movement of funds and identify individuals who may have played a role in the alleged scheme. The agency is also examining whether the money was transferred through multiple accounts before being used for other investments or asset purchases.
Money Allegedly Raised Through Multi-Level Marketing Scheme
Sources linked to the investigation said the investment company allegedly attracted customers through a multi-level marketing scheme that promised attractive returns on deposited funds. The arrangement reportedly encouraged people to invest by presenting the prospect of substantial financial gains.
Investigators are examining whether some investors received payments during the initial stages of the scheme. Such payments may have increased confidence among participants and encouraged them to invest larger amounts or persuade others to join.
However, payments allegedly began slowing down after some time, leaving investors facing difficulties in recovering their deposits. The ED is now investigating how the company recruited investors, how its payment structure operated and whether the funds collected were used for the purposes represented to customers.
In schemes involving promises of unusually high returns, initial payments can encourage further investment. However, the circumstances surrounding the alleged suspension of payments and the company’s financial operations remain subject to investigation. The precise nature of the arrangement and the extent of any financial wrongdoing will have to be established through evidence.
ED Suspects Diversion of Investors’ Money Into Real Estate
The agency suspects that a portion of the money collected from investors may have been transferred into real estate projects in Kolkata. Sources familiar with the investigation alleged that the projects were associated with influential business promoters who were said to have links with the state’s former ruling political establishment.
However, publicly available details about the alleged political connections and their relationship, if any, with the suspected diversion of investors’ funds remain limited. The involvement or responsibility of any individual or business group will need to be established through the evidence gathered during the investigation.
The ED is focusing on reconstructing the financial trail to determine how the money moved between accounts and whether it was ultimately used to acquire property or finance real estate developments.
Investigators are also examining the ownership and financial arrangements of the projects under scrutiny. Tracing the beneficiaries of the transactions could help establish whether the funds were transferred through intermediaries or routed across multiple entities before reaching their suspected destinations.
Previous Searches Conducted Last Month
Monday’s operation follows searches conducted by the ED last month at offices linked to the investment company and the residences of several of its officials. During that operation, investigators examined company documents, financial records and banking transactions.
Sources said the information and documents collected during the earlier searches were analysed before the agency decided to expand its investigation to additional locations. Financial records and banking documents were scrutinised to understand the flow of money and assess the actual scale of the company’s operations.
Investigators reportedly found indications that the company, which began its activities in Kolkata, subsequently expanded its operations into other states. The ED is now examining the nature of its business activities in different regions and whether money collected from investors was transferred outside West Bengal.
The expanded searches are expected to help investigators identify additional transactions, determine the extent of the suspected network and establish whether the company’s activities involved multiple entities or business interests.
Investigation Continues as Search Findings Remain Awaited
The ED had not publicly released detailed information about the outcome of Monday’s searches, including whether any documents or other material were seized. It was also unclear whether anyone had been detained or whether individuals would be summoned for questioning following the operation.
For now, the investigation is focused on identifying the sources of the funds, tracing their alleged use and establishing the ownership of assets that may have been acquired with investors’ money.
Further examination of financial records, company documents and property-related transactions could provide investigators with a clearer picture of the alleged scheme. The agency is also expected to examine potential beneficiaries and the company’s activities across different states as the probe progresses.
The allegations remain under investigation, and the role of the company’s officials, business associates and other potentially connected individuals will depend on the evidence established during the course of the inquiry.
