What appeared to be a routine case of acidity turned out to be a potentially life-threatening medical condition for a 61-year-old woman after months of recurring pain and repeated hospital visits. Doctors say the case highlights the dangers of ignoring persistent digestive symptoms that fail to respond to conventional treatment.
The woman reportedly suffered from severe upper abdominal and lower chest pain for nearly eight months. Her symptoms frequently worsened after meals and were relieved only after vomiting. Despite receiving treatment for acidity and acid reflux on multiple occasions, her condition continued to deteriorate, significantly affecting her daily life.
Rare Hernia and Twisted Stomach Detected
Following a detailed medical evaluation, specialists discovered that the patient was suffering from a large paraesophageal hiatal hernia, a condition in which part of the stomach moves from the abdominal cavity into the chest through an opening near the food pipe.
Further diagnostic imaging revealed an even more dangerous complication known as gastric volvulus, a rare condition in which the stomach twists abnormally. Medical experts warn that if left untreated, gastric volvulus can block food passage, cut off blood supply to the stomach and potentially lead to tissue death, infection and other life-threatening complications.
Doctors noted that the symptoms of this condition often resemble common acidity, indigestion or reflux disease, making diagnosis challenging and causing delays in treatment.

Robotic Surgery Helped Correct Complex Condition
To treat the condition, surgeons performed a robot-assisted procedure to reposition the stomach into its normal location and repair the enlarged opening in the diaphragm. The surgery also involved securing the stomach to reduce the risk of future twisting or recurrence.
Medical specialists say robotic surgery offers enhanced precision and better visibility in complex anatomical cases, particularly when organs have shifted from their normal positions.
Experts Stress Importance of Early Evaluation
Doctors emphasize that persistent acidity, recurrent vomiting, chest discomfort or unexplained abdominal pain should not always be dismissed as routine digestive problems. Structural abnormalities of the stomach and digestive tract can remain hidden for months and may only be detected through advanced imaging tests such as CT scans and endoscopy.
The patient recovered successfully after surgery and was discharged in stable condition. Healthcare experts say the case serves as a reminder that prolonged symptoms require thorough evaluation, as early diagnosis can prevent serious and potentially fatal complications.
